You Know What...
I got a Zune.

Many thanks to James Jones for turning it from a massively expensive, though aesthetically appealing, paperweight to a fully functioning piece of kick ass equipment. Everyone should blow him because he deserves it... and it would be fun.

Each year, everyone at my mother's place of employment makes a small wager very early on all the playoff teams for the upcoming nfl year, getting 1 point for every first round team you pick, 2 for every second round, 4 for each championship game team, 6 for each super bowl team, and 10 for the winner.

Now I have won this thing 5 of the past 10 years (playing usually around 10 or so others so 50% of friggin great). I would have thought I would have earned some respect by now, or at least not be called an outright moron. Here are my choices:

AFC 1st Round

- Kansas City
- Baltimore
- Cincinnati
- New England

NFC 1st Round

- Minnesota
- Arizona
- Seattle
- Philadelphia

AFC 2nd Round

- Kansas City
- New England
- Indianapolis
- Denver

NFC 2nd Round

- Arizona
- Seattle
- Carolina
- Dallas

AFC Championship Game

- Indianapolis
- Denver

NFC Championship Game

- Arizona
- Carolina

Super Bowl

- Denver
- Arizona

Winner: Arizona

Ok, so obviously there are some issues that other football fans have here. Yes I know I don't have the following teams going to the playoffs, I didn't forget about them.... ahem... Miami, NY Giants, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, and most notably, Pittsburgh. All overrated, most overachieved last year. The one I struggled leaving out the most was Miami, but as much as I think Culpepper is still a very good quarterback, I think he'll need at least half a season to adjust and by that time New England will have run away with the division. Pittsburgh: too many subtractions, not even additions. And, if you're interested I think the Browns will be a better team but their record won't reflect it since they will be playing in a very very tough division.

That brings us to the teams that everyone thinks I'm crazy for including: Baltimore, Philadelphia, Minnesota, and most notably, Arizona. McNair will make a huge difference on a team that has already been talented enough to compete the past few years, though it will be tough to get out of that division. Philly was just as good last year as they've always been, they just has too many injuries and too many distractions. They won't be quite as good as they were two years ago, but good enough for the playoffs. Minnesota only lost one game in the second half last year, and while Brad Johnson doesn't have much left, he has enough depth at RB and WR to make plays, and most importantly, not make mistakes.

That brings me to my Super Bowl winner: the Arizona Cardinals. People know how good their offense was last year regardless of who the quarterback was. They have 2 of the top 5 best wide receivers in the league in Fitzgerald and Boldin. What alot of people didn't realize was that they also had a top 10 defense that has only improved in the offseason. So what was missing? First there was the revolving door at QB between McCown and Warner. The job is now firmly in the (fragile) hands of Kurt Warner with McCown signing elsewhere and his backup now being rookie Matt Leinart. Then there's the big one: they had absolutely no running game to speak of. Enter the best running back in the league (talent wise not numbers wise) in Edgerrin James. This balanced attack and depth on both sides of the ball will carry them all the way.

Book it.

Last one

Today they did that there Cube. I have no problem with this even though Twilight Princess has yet to come out but at this point I consider it more of a Wii game than a Cube game.

Here is their list:

10) Soul Calibur II
9) Viewtiful Joe
8) Eternal Darkness
7) Animal Crossing
6) Super Mario Sunshine
5) Super Smash Bros. Melee
4) Mario Kart Double Dash
3) Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
2) Metroid Prime
1) Resident Evil 4

And here is mine:

10) Star Wars Rogue Squadron II
9) Super Monkey Ball
8) Ikaruga
7) Super Mario Sunshine
6) Mario Kart Double Dash
5) Viewtiful Joe
4) Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
3) Resident Evil 4
2) Eternal Darkness
1) Legend of Zelda Wind Waker

So... with all that mixed together, here is my all-encompassing console top 10

10) Jak 3
9) Eternal Darkness
8) God of War
7) Halo 2
6) Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
5) Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
4) Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

X-Play followed up their XBOX list with their top 10 PS2 games ever today. Don't know about the wisdom of this as games like God of War 2, Final Fantasy XII, and Okami and still down the pipeline, but its their right.

Their list is as follows:

10) SSX Tricky
9) Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
8) Ico
7) Sly Cooper 3
6) Metal Gear Solid 3
5) Katamari Damacy
4) Guitar Hero
3) Shadow of the Colossus
2) God of War
1) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Again, interesting, but here's mine

10) Front Mission 4
9) Hot Shots Golf Fore!
8) Champions of Norrath
7) Gitaroo Man
6) Ico
5) Final Fantasy X
4) Jak 3
3) God of War
2) Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
1) Devil May Cry

There's nothing wrong with putting GTA #1, however I have a problem putting that game in when I, as well as many gamers, just waited until there was a superior XBOX version before buying. I will mark this list as pending as this system isn't over until God of War 2 comes out.

Been playing some games lately. Some I've been meaning to get around to forever and a few new releases mixed in as well. I'll preface this by saying the only action I've gotten out of my 360 lately has been Uno, a game I can pick up at the dollar store. Time to pass out a few grades.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

This seems to be one of those games you get weird stares for if you own a 360 but don't own this game. So, with the screaming adoration of anyone who even mentions a single word about this game and picked it up. For me, Elder Scrolls is merely decent. I'll tell you the most overwhelming thing wrong with today's video game society is the negativity surrounding the word "linear." Yeah we all want choices and don't want our hands held but not if it means dropping me in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do but admire the photo realism of the game's trees.

Grade: C+

Stacked Featuring Daniel Negreanu

I know what you're thinking. Why spend $40 on a poker game when you can play online for free. However, this game promised revolutionary AI realism and, for the most part, it delivered. However, I can count only 2 times in the thousands of hands that I've played the number of times that the big blind actually raised before the flop when faced with the opportunity to check. Also, the number of bad beats you get in this game are absolutely ridiculous. I have been knocked out of several tournaments where my opponent is dominated and needs runners to beat me and they hit their miracle.

Grade: B

NFL Head Coach

I love football but hate Madden's ridiculous gameplay (and don't tell me about the old 2K games, they were not much better) so this appeared to be the game for me and so far it appears to be. There's alot of monotony to sift through but thats to be expected.

Early Impressions: Good

Also, X-Play, correctly assuming that all of the original XBOX's best games are behind them, compiled their top 10 best XBOX games and they were as follows:

10) Forza Motorsport
9) Jet Set Radio Future
8) Beyond Good & Evil
7) Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
6) Psychonauts
5) Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
4) Burnout 3
3) Ninja Gaiden
2) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
1) Halo 2

Interesting, but my list goes like this:

10) Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
9) Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2
8) Serious Sam
7) Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
6) Halo
5) Top Spin
4) Halo 2
3) Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
2) Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
1) Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2

Knights 2 gets absolutely no credit for fixing alot of the problems of the first while crafting a story where the light and dark side choices aren't so clearly defined. People tend to whine about the ending but I personally don't get the gripe. It's ok to like the first one better, but there's no reason why KOTOR 2 shouldn't get it's due.

Apparently they will soon be doing similar lists for the Cube and PS2, as will I.

To settle an argument...

What kind of dogs are used in the Iditarod?
The most commonly used dog in the Iditarod (and in all of mushing) is the Alaskan Husky. The Alaskan Husky is actually a mixed breed, or mutt, dog that is born and bred to love to pull. Alaskan Huskies are a descendent of the original northern sled dogs (mostly domesticated wolves and wild dogs) used by the native peoples of the North Country...
Alaskan Malamutes are purebred derivatives of the original sled dogs, and can be considered cousins to the Alaskan Husky. Some mushers use these breeds, but these breeds lack the stamina, endurance, and attitude of the Alaskans.

In particular, husky breeders are looking for dogs with an instinctive desire to pull long and hard through the toughest conditions....
Still, careful breeding over decades has produced dogs with telltale physiques. For one thing, the best sled-pulling dogs have quick, efficient gaits and remarkable strength for their size. "You rarely see a really good sled dog over about 55 pounds,"

Because of their adaptability to the cold, Alaskan climate, most sledding dogs are Alaskan Huskies.

The first major competition was the tremendously popular 1908 All-Alaska Sweepstakes (AAS), which was started by Allan "Scotty" Alexander Allan, and ran 408 miles (657 km) from Nome to Candle and back. The event introduced the first Siberian huskies to Alaska in 1910, where they quickly became the favored racing dog, replacing the Alaskan malamute, and mongrels bred from imported huskies and other large breeds, like setters and pointers.

I can go on and on.....

360 Impressions
So I decided to hold onto my 360 as it wasn't going for all that much on the bay. Anyways, overall I'm pretty pleased with it. The only game I picked up was Call of Duty 2 which is phenomenal but not much more impressive than anything the original XBOX could have done. There's still clipping issues, there's still the occasional stupid AI, and there's still muddy textures... just like the original XBOX! Still though I recommend it to any 360 owner or anyone with a PC that will run it.

However, though I'm shocked as hell to say it, what's been consuming most of my time is none other than the seemingly over-hyped for years "XBOX Live Arcade." People, including myself, made fun of it but it is actually pretty cool. The games on there are all pretty solid for the most part and all highly entertaining for 10-15 minute intervals (just like they were designed to) and well worth the $5-$10 pricetags (if you translate "Microsoft points" into $). However, where the hell is Ms. Pac-Man?

I highly recommend Geometry Wars, Outpost Kaloki X, and Zuma. My personal favorite has been playing Spades and Hearts online (and doing quite well if I do say so). The only problem is the same one that has and always will be prevolent... quitters.

The system overall gets a B- grade thus far in my book and really hasn't done anything to postpone my unbridled desire for a PS3 (let there be no doubt that the PS3 with completely shit all over the 360.... despite my hatred of Sony).

Year End Awards Time

The nominees: Call of Duty 2 (XBOX 360, PC), Mario Kart DS, Burnout Legends (PSP), Hot Shots Golf Open Tee (PSP), Untold Legends (PSP), Wario Ware Touched! (DS), God of War (PS2)

and the winner is: GOD OF WAR.....

a few words: Hey Dave, remember when I told you to buy God of War and you bought Xenosaga 2 instead? Stupid Bastard. God of War wins because no Splinter Cell games came out this year.

The nominees: Star Wars Episode 3, King Kong, Batman Begins, War of the Worlds

and the winner is: Batman Begins

a few words: Like video games, this was a bad year for movies. Though I liked Star Wars, I'm not sure you could make a better Batman movie or have a better Batman for that matter (and yes that includes Michael Keaton)

The nominees: Better than Ezra: Before the Robots, My Chemical Romance: 3 Cheers for Sweet Revenge, Keane: Hopes and Fears, Green Day: Bullet in a Bible, Goldfinger: Disconnection Notice

a few words: This one is no contest though Keane's extraordinary CD would win most years. Their first oringal material in years does not disappoint in the least. Here's hoping they stick with this new label.

The nominees: My Chemical Romance: Helena, Weezer: Perfect Situation, 311: Don't Tread on Me, Keane: Everybody's Changing, Better Than Ezra: Breathless

a few words: Weezer's best song in years, perfect situation, charged on late but this early entry ranks easily in my top 5 songs of all time. It's a shame BTE did not release this song to the public, instead opting with more quirky, gimmicky songs, and a re-release. For those who will be attending Angel and mine's wedding, it has been determined that this song will be our wedding song.

The nominees: 24, X-Play, House, The Apprentice, My Name is Earl, Family Guy, Prison Break

and the winner is: FAMILY GUY

a few words: This one was really tough as all these shows were fantastic to say the least. However, when my favorite animated show of all time comes back with a vengeance and is better than ever, I have to stand up and take notice..... hats off Family Guy

Perhaps a few more awards at a later time, we'll see.
